What’s in a name…

Okay…it’s official.  I have grown up following the SEC and I still have no idea whether Auburn’s mascot is the Tiger or the War Eagle…so I figured today was as good a day as any to get this straightened out.

All of my Auburn friends are going to hate me, but please remember that this is coming from a girl that has a family history of names/nicknames that would completely make your head spin.  My grandmother’s name was Nannie Lee (yes that’s my name sake), but they called her Sugar.  She had a sister named “Honey”, and brothers named WM (that would stand for William.  I guess back in “THE DAY” it wasn’t too hip (because we are obviously hip beyond measure) to use Will, Bill or Billy) and IJ (short for Ira Jack).  My grandfather called my brother “Bubba” who we to this day still lovingly call Bubs.  My sister’s name is Bell and my current nickname is Rishy (thanks to my adorable nephew named Trey who we call “Baby Trey”, but have now shortened it to “Baby Tree” or just plain “Tree”).  But hold on, it gets even better.  We don’t exclude our loving pets from this family torture.  My precious little chocolate poodle’s name is Gracie, but we call her “Mommy’s Girl” which has currently been translated down to “De Mommy Dirl”.   I guess we aren’t really trendsetters since Pop Culture has followed in our footsteps with unusual names like “Snookie”, “Lady Gaga”, and even “Cher”.  You KNOW those names all started somewhere and it wasn’t from their mothers.  Come on…even I am smart enough to know that “Ochocinco” didn’t just happen by accident.  So maybe Rishy, Bubs and Bell ARE a little hip after all, and the world of nicknames will without a doubt never be the same.

So what’s really in a name?  I have no idea, but I am going to be counting down the minutes until kickoff tonight and I can guarantee you that whatever the REAL name of the winning team is…just isn’t going to be as important to me as the excitement of watching the last 3 hours of the 2010 college football season.  And you can betcha that the minute the game is over I will be looking forward to the start of 2011 college football season.

ENJOY!!!

When this little face is cheering for you, who can be against you?!?!?

LOL, SO true Tricia! Being from MS myself, only a true Southerner can understand the slew of nicknames/double names/ pet names. Thanks for this, it gave me a giggle this morning.
